GENERAL BIKRAM SINGH

General Bikram Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC is the current Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army (CoAS). Previously the head of the Eastern Command, he became the 25th CoAS succeeding General V. K. Singh, who retired on 31 May 2012.He is second Sikh to be CoAS, the first having been General J. J. Singh. He is also the current Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC) of the Indian armed forces.

  His colleagues remember him as a bright cadet at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), where he held the appointment of Battalion Cadet Adjutant (BCA).

As a young student, the chief had considered becoming a doctor. He was an exceptional student of Zoology and Biology. But the wars of 1962 and 1965 motivated him to join the NDA in 1968.The army chief as a young boy studied at Punjab Public School, Nabha. An avid sportsman, cricket, athletics and hockey were his favourite games in school. Singing and painting were his other talents that also fetched him awards in school.

FAMILY-

Bikram Singh is married to Surjeet Kaur and the couple have two children.

MILITARY CAREER-

A graduate of the 40th course at the National Defence Academy, Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry on 31 March 1972. He was adjudged the 'Best Young Officer' at the Young Officer's course at the Infantry School. He was awarded both the Commando Dagger for being the best commando and the 'Best in Tactics' trophy. He later was an instructor at the Commando Wing of the Infantry School. He graduated from the United States Army War College in 2004, and during his tenure as the Chief of Army Staff, he was honoured by being inducted into the institute's International Fellows Hall of Fame for having made a significant and enduring military/humanitarian contribution to international peace and stability.

After completing the Higher Command Course, he served his first tenure as a Director in the Military Operations (MO) Directorate. The tenure coincided with the Kargil War and he was the official spokesperson of the Army during that period. He went on to serve four important tenures at Army HQ: an additional tenure in the MO Directorate as the Deputy Director General, two tenures in the Perspective Planning Directorate, as the Deputy Director General of Perspective Planning (Strategy) and later, as the Additional Director General. He was posted back to the Army HQ as a Lieutenant General to serve as the Director General Staff Duties (DGSD).He has held positions of GOC-in-C Eastern Command, GOC 15 Corps, GOC Rashtriya Rifles and GOC of Eastern Division in the Democratic Republic of Congo.He was wounded while posted as a Brigadier in Jammu & Kashmir, where he has spent much of his service.

  



Two Assignments With United Nation In America

His international forays with peace-keeping missions include two assignments with the United Nations in Central America (ONUCA and ONUSAL) and as the Deputy Force Commander and GOC of Eastern
Division in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As a Brigadier, he was selected to attend the US Army War College, Pennsylvania, where besides excelling in academics he also won the International Toastmaster's award in public speaking.

After the 'Higher Command Course', he served his first tenure in the Military Operations (MO) Directorate. The tenure, as a Director, coincided with the Kargil war and he was assigned to brief the media on the daily progress of the conflict. Later, he was also made responsible for writing the official version of the war history.

THE DAY OF MAY31,2014 IN HIS LIFE

"Eastern Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh is appointed as new chief for Indian Army" after hearing this Bikram Singh was surprized and was not believing this.He will now head the 1.3-million strong Indian Army succeeding General Vijay Kumar Singh, who retires from service on May 31, 2012.He is not believing that he is the king of 2nd largest army of the world.Now a midle class boy from Nabha will rule the world's second largest army. Being the first chief who has not seen action in a conventional war there are many disputes for his appointment for the chief of the army.
